What is Yoga Nidra?
Yoga Nidra is a form of Meditation. Another name for it is Yogic Sleep or Restorative Sleep. During the Nidra Meditation, you will be guided into a deep state of relaxed consciousness, where the mind may settle into a place between wakefulness and sleep.
This is where the mind moves from a state of wakefulness into a dream state. It is in this state that the body restores sleep. Yoga Nidra can heal mental, emotional and physical blockages non invasively. For example, a person suffering from PTSD does not have to visit the traumatic event or traumas in order to heal. This is because Yoga Nidra works with the Autonomic Nervous System. Processes in our bodies that occur without conscious thought, such as breathing, digestion and heart rate, can be regulated, which can allow for a more healthy and fulfilling life.
Stages of Brain Waves & Sleep
1. Gamma - concentration
2. Beta - anxiety dominant, external attention, relaxation
3. Alpha - deep relaxation, passive attention, secrete serotonin (calming hormone)
4. Theta - deep relaxation, inward focus
5. Delta - sleep cell regeneration, tissue repair, boost immune system, rewire negative thoughts and emotions.
During normal sleep, our brain waves progress from the Alpha into Delta. People who are not able to go to the Theta and Delta stages regularly suffer from insomnia, have difficulty sleeping restfully, suffer from stress, anxiety, depression or trauma and other health issues. Because the Yoga Nidra experience takes you to the deeper brainwave states that cannot be reached during conventional sleep, the body has the opportunity to heal.
*Yoga Nidra is not a substitute for sleep. 45 mins of Yoga Nidra feels like a restful 3 hours of deep sleep.
